Rethink

We may need to rethink the style of our opening sequence, due to our idea's almost uncanny resemblance to the opening of "The Blair Witch Project" (1999). Today we actually watched the opening of "the Blair witch Project" and realized that the shot by shot structure was essentially the same as our own. So to maintain originality and avoid copyright infringement we may need to put a spin on our idea or our opening.

The option of a more action style opening is an idea to look into for our group, it will give us a more broad and creative form of work to create our opening title sequence.

Shot Types

180 degree rule
The 180° rule is a basic guideline in film making that states that two characters (or other elements) in the same scene should always have the same left/right relationship to each other. If the camera passes over the imaginary axis connecting the two subjects, it is called crossing the line. The new shot, from the opposite side, is known as a reverse angle.

Establishing Shot
In film and television, an establishing shot sets up, or "establishes", a scene's setting and/or its participants. Typically it is a shot at the beginning (or, occasionally, end) of a scene indicating where, and sometimes when, the remainder of the scene takes place.

Close up
In film, television, still photography and the comic strip medium a close-up tightly frames a person or an object. Close-ups are one of the standard shots used regularly with medium shots and long shots. Close-ups display the most detail, but they do not include the broader scene. Moving in to a close-up or away from a close-up is a common type of zooming.

Match on Action
Cutting on action or matching on action refers to a film editing technique where the editor cuts from one shot to another view that matches the first shot's action and energy.

Reaction Shot
Reaction shot is a term used in motion picture production and cinematography referring to a basic unit of film grammar. It is a shot which cuts away from the main scene in order to show the reaction of a character to it.

Long shot
In photography, film and video, a long shot (sometimes referred to as a full shot or a wide shot) typically shows the entire object or human figure and is usually intended to place it in some relation to its surroundings.

Point Of View (POV)
This shot is maid to make the viewers feel like they are in the film showing footage from a characters point of view, it emphasises Emotions and Important actions, also the ambiant sounds are Louder and more pronounced, this makes the viewer Feel truly involved in whats happening on screen. A great example of this is "CloverFeild" & "The Blair Witch Prodject"

Our Production logo

T2-59 PRODUCTION LOGO from SATMEDIASTUDIES on Vimeo.

After a long period of time working on Photoshop, and with a large amount pointers from the group Jace created this Brilliant Logo in which the sprockets / gears are going to rotate and the bright yellow light shall flicker like an original camera this is quite a tasking idea we have realised, with when we imported the images into Final Cut we realised if the Cogs wouldn't rotate in the correct way unless the point of rotation was centralized, if it wasn't the entire cog would just move in a circle without spinning, so further editing on photo shop corrected this.

Having finished putting the actual idea of the camera, we needed a sound track which was quite specific towards the camera because if it didn't fit the image it would seem out of place, having searched the internet for some non copyrighted sounds only found that we would have to pay an extortionet price for a 20 second clip and then Steve produced these CD's for us there were such a large amount of tracks for us to sift through but on the last CD we found the ideal track,
as listed below

Initial Ideas - storyboard

IDEA ONE :

From the first time we started discussing our ideas about a thriller Sass came up with the style of the Blair Witch Project, the idea suited this because of the tension building, these photo's illustrate the idea of our film,
Having a group of people going camping having a jolly good time then it possibly going all wrong and seeing what happens
This idea would have quite a lot of problems with it, all the materials needed, where could we camp ? and a few other trivial things

This film idea is called Day Break.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LnqnHtp_nRs

^^^
A link to the inspiration but it seems looking back at this it is quite a similar idea to the original, this will have to be changed if we roll with this idea.

IDEA TWO:
Essentially this idea is quite similar to the first idea, but instead of going camping its about a group going to a large city like London, and Disaster happens. The entire video is filmed like the first idea, in first person, through an in scene camera. The group are just testing out the new camera in London for the day, then accidentally catch something they shouldn't on tape; a murder. The full film would feature a creepy and interesting journey, to try and find someone that will help them, the murderer is coming.

IDEA THREE:

This idea has elements of the blair witch project in it but ultimately steers away from horror and the unseen menace. it begins with shots of the woods and the campsite in the morning after the attack has happened and moves on to showing a character"s corpse being dragged through the forest to a location where the other corpses are arranged in a formation around a stump. there is a video camera on the stump. the lengths of some of the shots can be varied.

Idea
4:

The main idea of this was to get away from the idea of Blair Witch, not that it was a bad idea but because i felt we should have a selection of ideas.

At the beginning we have an establishing shot of a group of soldiers running through an area with packedges [main idea was it was a corridor], and one of them drops one of the capsules they were ment to be 'transporting'.

The soldier who dropped his capsule goes to pick up the capsule but the other two don't realises this and run off ahead.

While picking up the capsule the soldier gets attacked by a 'mutant' type creater monster.

We'll have a POV [Point Of View] shot of the creature targeting the soldier so that we can build up the suspense of the situation.

The creature itself doesn't matter so much as to how it attacks, were having the monster being seen for literally only a second in shot. so its sudden and unexpected.

The other two are going to be attacked but not in the same way but with the view of their faces reaction. All in the POV of the creature

The final scene is the capsule rolling away being illuminated by the gun fire.

Initial ideas for the Thriller

Here is a detailed summary of what we have decided to do for our thriller opening:

Scene 1(Two people):
It starts off with a black screen, camera pressed against cushion.
(First person) "Check this out, new camera for the trip"
Camera comes up slowly and does a pan, to show a room filled with bags.
(Second person) "Yer its looks cool, Hey over here...''
Camera pans over to the person.
(Second Person) "HELLLO"
(Second person) ''What's the quality like?"
(First Person) "I dunno, lets take a look"

Scene 2(Four People):
Camera just shows black screen, the in-between recordings on tape.
It then cuts to being in a car, same person holding the camera, The passenger holding the camera would either be in the front steat (turning back at passengers in the back to talk) or in the back showing the driver, the front seat passenger talking and showing the view towards where they were going.
(First Person) "hey (characters name) hows (Drivers name)'s Driving *dirty chuckle*"
(Second Person) "yeh not bad i suppose, kind of like my gran... *laugh*"
(First Person) *Pans around the car showing some passengers asleep and the luggage in the car* See what goodies we have here? *laugh* as you can see we have slightly over packed for a few nights Don't ya think?"

Scene 3
~Camera Cuts out and shows the black screen for a second with the sound of a winding on tape~
(first Person) "Ahh... we have finally arrived.. in good timing too, still enough day light for you guys to set up camp *chuckles to himself*
(second person) "Christ (first persons name) why don't you put down that camera and come help us.?. this was your idea after all.."
(first person) "I'm documenting.. other wise i would help"
(third Person) "No your slacking. put down the camera and help us you lazy bugger"

Scene 4
~the screen will go black again and suddenly cut in once its turned to night with each character sat around a fire, telling stories and cooking food~
(third person) [Part way through telling a Ghost Story] {in a low deep voice} "and as the woman stepped through the door... she felt a cold shiver pass down her neck onto her back.. she turned round and !!!SHOUTS BANG!!!"
~Every one Except Person 3 Screams~
(person four) "Damn (person 3) why.. we ain't going to be able to sleep tonight.."
(person two) "I'm just going to the loo for a sec Be Right Back, don't start the next one without me .."

Scene 5
~a few minuets pass and though Person 4 is telling a Story Person 2 has some important news~
(person 2) {Whispers} "Guys... Psst Guys"
(Rest of group) "what up?"
(person 2) "guys i swear i just saw some guy on that other Field dragging a guy.. i swear down!"

scene 6
~the screen goes black again as the group starts to get up and move towards the Fence joining the Fields~
{As they start to get close the camera will cut back in showing them sneaking up to the fence whispering all their speech}
(person 2) "See i knew it ! i F****** knew it, what is that !?"
(person 1) "yeh.. guys i think we should go.. this don't feel right.."
(person 3) "why? is your Spidy Sense tingling?.."
(person 1) "no I'm just not up for finding out how this ends."#
~All of a sudden there is a quick flash of light and a Loud gun shot, The group turns into chaos and the Unknown man hears and See's this and puts on a chase~

From this point on there is very little speech just shouting for help and occasional cut outs as the camera gets knocked about while everyone
runs. mostof the sounds for this will be Non-Diagetic due to it being shot mainly "POV" this will enchance the Ambiant sound and create tension & Suspence there will be some Diagetic sounds like a Deep sound track at times to add Suspence and Also the gunshot would have to be added in.

Ideas for Logo

We are currently in the making of our logo, our idea is that it looks like a big camera, one of the older ones. Instead of the reel that's usually in them, this one has cogs and nuts.

we Have Evaluated some other Production logo's and we started off with DreamWorks.

We found out that The originality of the Logo was key to its success, the more original and eye catching it is the better, Dream Works uses a very limited colour range which compliment each other and dont move your attention to other area's of the screen they dont want you to.

Then underneath we have the out production name:

"Sprockets"

Here is some pictures of what is included in the logo:

Also we decided to make a soundtrack to recap for Garage Band, this was called Murder By Numbers.

the idea we to learn how to make a soundtrack that sounded intimidating and with low tones, this emphasis the dark nature within the sound clip.

Other Student Work Evaluation

Student Work's : Group T2-62
Thriller's name : The Reckoning

Camerawork:
There is a large variety of shots, such as close-ups, mid and long shots. They use many, many different angles for the movie. Moat seem to be steady, so on a tripod. There are a few shots which are not steady at all, but there supposed to be like that, put in by an editing technique.

Sound:
The music throughout is very much how a thriller's soundtrack should sound like. If i had to compare it to another, it would be James Bond or Mission Impossible. It's very fast paced, and builds up to a climax, very much like a true thriller.

Editing:
Again, all the video clips are put together really fast, to give a feel like the story is moving fast. The unsteady camera footage, that i talked about earlier, was all faded together to give the impression that there was more people moving than there actually was; this worked very well.

Mise-en-Scene:
There are a variety of props used throughout the video, from briefcases to guns. These all compliment the movie very well. Also the characters in the video wear suits and balaclavas. This also, compliment the overall feel of the video.

Titles:
The titles are quite specific in there lacing throughout the video. They only appear at the top and bottom of the screen, but are placed left or right, depending on what the video shows at that time. They are in white font, and quite big, probably around 40 font size. Also they just appear and then fade out, so no fading in. The title that's up, never stays for more than one shot, so if the clip behind them cuts, the title would have faded out before the end of it.

Overall:
The opening is very well made with all the different camera angles and great music. It's one downfall is the fact that it just isn't an opening, its a trailer. This one fact just happens to mean a great deal, because the task was to create an opening.

Sub-Genre's of thriller's

General Thriller
A genre of fiction that attempts to "thrill" its audience by placing characters at great risk. This constant unease throughout the story makes the narrative suspenseful to the reader by creating a tense atmosphere. Usually being mistaken as action, there is an easy way to tell the difference. Action films show the main character running towards the danger and the character in the thriller, running away from the danger.

Psychological Thriller
A Sub Genre of thriller that makes the characters exposed to danger on a mental level rather than a physical one. Characters are no longer reliant on physical strength to overcome their brutish enemies (which is often the case in typical action-thrillers), but rather are reliant on their mental resources, whether it be by battling wits with a formidable opponent or by battling for equilibrium in the character's own mind. This can be internal (the Actor's own mind is the wall to overcome) or External (another character causes others to have mental walls)
- Elements of drama and/or mystery
- Danger on a mental level, rather than physical
- Two or more characters preying on the minds of each other, to create conflict, or:
- One solitary character in mental conflict with their own mind
- Characters try and discover their own purpose
- Characters have a fear or fascination with death
- Narrative contains confusion of what is real or what isn't
- Non-linear editing, flashbacks, montages

Political Thriller
is a thriller that is set against the backdrop of political power struggle. They usually involve various plots, rarely legal, designed to give political power to someone, while his opponents try to stop him from getting it. They can involve national or international political scenarios.

Techno Thriller
a hybrid genre, drawing subject matter generally from spy thrillers , war novels , and science fiction. They include a disproportionate amount (relative to other genres) of technical detail on its subject matter (typically military technology)

Action Thriller

Action thriller is a genre which involves heavy action scenes which consists of either hand-to-hand combat or gun fights between people, this type of genre tends to amaze people with the action,

Se7en Evaluation

Se7en

Camera Work
The Camera Work in the opening title sequence in the movie 'Se7en' is very dark, shady and stays very close up to the action that takes place on screen. In the title sequence we see a man or presumed man adding a news reel in to a scrap book and writing in to a diary. The camera work is done in a way that you can not see the man's face, only his hands and what he see's and does with his hands, an example of this is when we see him removing a blade out of an old style razor. These clips show us seemingly random videos, like he's fiddling with a razor blade. If you look close enough you work out that hes not just fiddling, he scraping off his fingerprints, him being the "bad guy" in the film, this is quite clever.

Editing
The clips are put together very much like how montage is put together. This montage includes quite a wide variety of clips which could be described as abstract. The clips range from things like cutting fingerprints off to dipping a tea bag. Just talking about the editing sounds creepy, this is exactly what this thriller was going for, and they did it well.

Sound
The music from the scene, is an adaptation of the song "Closer to god by Nine Inch Nails". Not that you can really tell what song it is, is just comes out as a beat, with ambient sounds being played throughout, the sounds being nails down a blackboard. Then a robot type voice, straining to talk, the sound of a tape being re-winded fast. A tapping sound, like somone typing on a typewriter. All of these ambient sounds make the sequence very unnerving and freaky, they put you on edge, and give you the feeling that anything could happen at any moment.

Mise-en-scene
I've talked about some things in the scene but here are some others, plasters on the just been cut fingers, pictures of people's faces being scribbled out by black pen. A book that's being written in very small writing.

Titles
The titles are not one i think many people would have seen before, there again very abstract. They seem to come in with the beat from the music. The font looks like it's been handwritten, not neat and like its been scratched in.
