Test footage

On the thursday, waiting for the filming weekend to come, we decided to shoot some footage that could help us prepare for the weekend. We idenified problems which if filmed on the actual night, could have ruined our editing. E.g. We had a shot of the camera paning around the gun held by the army person. This looked really, really cool. But we found that it just wasn't suitable to the thriller that we were trying to achieve.

Filming Location and Idea

Eventually we decided on a location and an idea;

The location was outside the Grafton Center in Cambridge city center. It had several Pro's and Con's.
Pro:
- Lighting, most parts of the film where perfectly placed, by the immediate environment.
- Industrial environment, raises questions like "What could be going on in a city that's so abnormal".
- Secluded.
- Good variety and contrast of large and small areas.

Cons:
- Lighting, at some points in the footage we found that scenes were too dark to make out, rendering those shots useless. Also on some of the shots there are artificial lights that are too bright.
- Public area, some of the shots proved very hard to get because the general public/ the general public's vehicles kept getting in the shot, also the fact that there is a chinese takeaway or a design company logo in some shots removes some element of mystery and suspense from those shots.

filming equipment

To shoot our film we are using a small amount of equipment, consisting of:

Tripod:





we are using a small amount of equipment due to the fact we dont need a Dolly as we arnt doing any chase scenes or follows, also most of our shots are going to be stationary or POV

Issues
There wasn't any major issues with the equipment, it catered to all our needs and did the job well, the only issue that can be raised is the temperature control with the camera, the camera didn't work to its max ability from the beginning of the shoot which worried us slightly as a group when we tryed to review the footage on the spot we ended up looking at a stripped up screen, the panic on our faces was a funny sight tho.

however once the camera got warmed up from shooting the picture quality returned to standard quality.

one other very minor issue was with the tripod, one of the rubber stoppers that was on the end of the leg kept coming off which was an annoyance as it got the horizon balance out by having it lean too far left.

we solved the issur with the tripods spirit leve which was attached to it, the tripod camera holster has a variety of level manipulating devices which combated the tripods crippled leg.

Final Idea

since having realised that the our original idea was too similar to "the Blair witch Project" we decided to totally re-think and choose one of our other ideas, after a Very long discussion we decided to use IDEA 4 with this idea it gives us a larger amount of room to play with due to the slightly Rural + urban style, also the sorts of shots Jace has listed in the storyboard, it means we can work with a large amount of footage and we could make a really good final piece.

Story line:

At the beginning we have an establishing shot of a group of soldiers running through an area with packedges [Outdoor in a Urban area], and one of them drops one of the capsules they were ment to be 'transporting'.
The soldier who dropped his capsule goes to pick up the capsule but the other one dose not realises this and runs off ahead.
While picking up the capsule the soldier gets attacked by a 'mutant' type creater monster.
We'll have a POV [Point Of View] shot of the creature targeting the soldier so that we can build up the suspense of the situation.
The creature itself doesn't matter so much as to how it attacks, we are not showing the monster at all as it would close off the possibilities of what the monster is.
The other one is going to be attacked but not in the same way but with the view of their faces reaction. All in the POV of the creature
The final scene is the capsule rolling away being illuminated by the gun fire.

both these photo's helped Jace convince me of the possibilities of the Third idea, proposed by Jace, These photo's are spectacular but trying to find something similar in the local area is going to pose quite a test.

Jace had surgested that the Costume was Styled in the sence of Amy Members / soldiers this wouldent pose too much of a problem due to some of us knowing people in Caddets or who own gear so we could borrow some.

Rethink

We may need to rethink the style of our opening sequence, due to our idea's almost uncanny resemblance to the opening of "The Blair Witch Project" (1999). Today we actually watched the opening of "the Blair witch Project" and realized that the shot by shot structure was essentially the same as our own. So to maintain originality and avoid copyright infringement we may need to put a spin on our idea or our opening.

The option of a more action style opening is an idea to look into for our group, it will give us a more broad and creative form of work to create our opening title sequence.

Our Production logo

After a long period of time working on Photoshop, and with a large amount pointers from the group Jace created this Brilliant Logo in which the sprockets / gears are going to rotate and the bright yellow light shall flicker like an original camera this is quite a tasking idea we have realised, with when we imported the images into Final Cut we realised if the Cogs wouldn't rotate in the correct way unless the point of rotation was centralized, if it wasn't the entire cog would just move in a circle without spinning, so further editing on photo shop corrected this.

Having finished putting the actual idea of the camera, we needed a sound track which was quite specific towards the camera because if it didn't fit the image it would seem out of place, having searched the internet for some non copyrighted sounds only found that we would have to pay an extortionet price for a 20 second clip and then Steve produced these CD's for us there were such a large amount of tracks for us to sift through but on the last CD we found the ideal track,

Initial Ideas - storyboard

IDEA ONE :



From the first time we started discussing our ideas about a thriller Sass came up with the style of the Blair Witch Project, the idea suited this because of the tension building, these photo's illustrate the idea of our film,
Having a group of people going camping having a jolly good time then it possibly going all wrong and seeing what happens
This idea would have quite a lot of problems with it, all the materials needed, where could we camp ? and a few other trivial things

This film idea is called Day Break.

A link to the inspiration but it seems looking back at this it is quite a similar idea to the original, this will have to be changed if we roll with this idea.

IDEA TWO:

Essentially this idea is quite similar to the first idea, but instead of going camping its about a group going to a large city like London, and Disaster happens. The entire video is filmed like the first idea, in first person, through an in scene camera. The group are just testing out the new camera in London for the day, then accidentally catch something they shouldn't on tape; a murder. The full film would feature a creepy and interesting journey, to try and find someone that will help them, the murderer is coming.

IDEA THREE:



This idea has elements of the blair witch project in it but ultimately steers away from horror and the unseen menace. it begins with shots of the woods and the campsite in the morning after the attack has happened and moves on to showing a character"s corpse being dragged through the forest to a location where the other corpses are arranged in a formation around a stump. there is a video camera on the stump. the lengths of some of the shots can be varied.

Ideas for Logo

We are currently in the making of our logo, our idea is that it looks like a big camera, one of the older ones. Instead of the reel that's usually in them, this one has cogs and nuts.

we Have Evaluated some other Production logo's and we started off with DreamWorks.



We found out that The originality of the Logo was key to its success, the more original and eye catching it is the better, Dream Works uses a very limited colour range which compliment each other and dont move your attention to other area's of the screen they dont want you to.


Then underneath we have the out production name:

"Sprockets"

Also we decided to make a soundtrack to recap for Garage Band, this was called Murder By Numbers.


the idea we to learn how to make a soundtrack that sounded intimidating and with low tones, this emphasis the dark nature within the sound clip.

Sub-Genre's of thriller's

General Thriller
A genre of fiction that attempts to "thrill" its audience by placing characters at great risk. This constant unease throughout the story makes the narrative suspenseful to the reader by creating a tense atmosphere. Usually being mistaken as action, there is an easy way to tell the difference. Action films show the main character running towards the danger and the character in the thriller, running away from the danger.



Psychological Thriller
A Sub Genre of thriller that makes the characters exposed to danger on a mental level rather than a physical one. Characters are no longer reliant on physical strength to overcome their brutish enemies (which is often the case in typical action-thrillers), but rather are reliant on their mental resources, whether it be by battling wits with a formidable opponent or by battling for equilibrium in the character's own mind. This can be internal (the Actor's own mind is the wall to overcome) or External (another character causes others to have mental walls)
- Elements of drama and/or mystery
- Danger on a mental level, rather than physical
- Two or more characters preying on the minds of each other, to create conflict, or:
- One solitary character in mental conflict with their own mind
- Characters try and discover their own purpose

a hybrid genre, drawing subject matter generally from spy thrillers , war novels , and science fiction. They include a disproportionate amount (relative to other genres) of technical detail on its subject matter (typically military technology)








Action Thriller

Action thriller is a genre which involves heavy action scenes which consists of either hand-to-hand combat or gun fights between people, this type of genre tends to amaze people with the action,
